Dog Allergy RemediesAllergies are not one you wish on your worst enemies- OK fine, it is but not on your beloved pooch. It is super uncomfortable and a real pain for the dogs that are suffering from allergies. You need to look for reliable dog allergy remedies that you can keep on hand in case your dog break out and have an allergic reaction on any given day.

For us humans, our respiratory system gets the brunt of the pain when allergies strike. We sneeze, wheeze, cough, have watery eyes and a runny nose. Our dogs also suffer some of these symptoms, but for the most part, allergic dogs have their skin to worry about most when they get allergies.

Signs that a dog is allergies will show mostly on his skin. He will break out into rashes and hives. Your dog will scratch and even bite himself in an effort to relieve himself of the relentless itch he is feeling. The problem is that this self mutilation eventually leads to open wounds and secondary skin infections that may even be worse than the original problem, which are allergies.

dog Food allergiesThe first thing you have to figure out is the source of your dog’s allergies. It can either be because of fleas, food or some ingredient in his food or a chemical he comes into contact with (ingredients in detergent, soap, shampoo, etc.)

Dogs are not allergic to fleas per se, but certain dogs can be allergic to an infected flea’s saliva. The flea bites the dog and releases saliva to clot the blood of the bite, from here the allergies ensues. If your dog is allergic to fleas, the best dog allergy remedies is to give him anti flea repellents, and spray him with a mixture of water and citronella (citronella is repulsive to fleas). If you don’t have citronella, use lavender, eucalyptus, or even the juice of one large lemon.

Food allergies are fairly common so you need to put your dog on a hypoallergenic diet if you suspect that this is the case. Remove grains from his diet and feed him fresh vegetables and high grade meat. Create one or two hypoallergenic diets that you can rotate every three months or so to keep him stable and allergy free.

Dog Allergy RemediesWhen it comes to contact allergies, you will need to find out which particular product he is allergic to and keep it away from him as much as possible. Use dog products (human products are too harsh for dogs) made with natural moisturizing ingredients like aloe vera and oatmeal. Frequent bathing can dry out the dog’s skin so be sure to use only the mildest products on your dog.

Your vet can prescribe antihistamines to relieve your dog of his painful itching and hives. As much as you are able, use natural dog allergy remedies that will not be too strong for the dog. Dab some olive oil over painful hot spots, or mix some oatmeal with a little bit of warm water and rub it over the infected area. Cover the paste with a towel and do it again after a few hours until relief comes.
