How to Deal with Dog Skin Allergies Effectively

Dog skin allergiesDog skin allergies are common incidents that experienced dog owners have learned to handle. While they are not terminal in most cases, they can be extremely painful as the dog will try to itch and chew his own skin to relieve himself of persistent itchiness. This self-mutilation can lead to further infections as open wounds become a breeding ground for bacteria and other organisms.

Usually, allergies are the direct result of a substance that irritated your dog’s skin (contact dermatitis). It may be cause by a number of reasons. It may be from a specific ingredient in a product you used shampoos, detergents, etc; food; medication; pollen; or insects and parasites. It is very important that you find out what this is and eliminate the dog’s exposure to it as soon as possible.

Of course, many times the dog is outdoors and we cannot control environmental factors; however what we can control we should. Make sure you clean the house as often as you can to help keep away allergies. It would help if you do away with carpets, rugs and drapes that will catch dust easily. A centralized air cleaner will radically improve the general atmosphere of the house.

Usually, allergic reactions will include dog dry skin, itchiness, redness. Anti-histimine and/or hydrocortisone topical will help alleviate these symptoms. You can get these sprays and creams in almost any pet store or drugstores. Benadryl can also be used orally for some animals although you must always consult with the vet with regard to the dosage and frequency of medications used especially if your dog already has an existing medical condition.

Dog skin allergiesDog dry skin can also be remedied by using natural, specially formulated canine shampoos and products that are specifically aimed to moisturize the skin. Brushing the skin before and after bathing will stimulate the animal’s natural oils and bring a nice shine to the coat. You can also check for parasites or open wounds that will aggravate his allergies when you comb his hair.

You can also impede the progress of dog skin allergies by making fresh water constantly available to your pet and giving him daily diet of healthy, nutrient-rich food. Fresh fruits and vegetables; as well as dietary supplements of omega 3 fatty acids, sunflower oil will help keep him hydrated. Healthy food will boost his immune system which will fight infections and bacteria that are trying to get into his system.

Remember, sometimes even if it is your pet that has allergies you or your family can also get infected. This is not always the case but it is always better to be safe than sorry. Do not give your dog access to the whole of the house; and after handling him wash your hands thoroughly to avoid spreading the infection.

It doesn’t mean that you cannot enjoy being with your furry friend if he is sick. You must however exercise the necessary precautions for him to get well so that he can fully enjoy being his healthy and lovable self soon.
