You will see many celebrities toting around one of the cutest dog breeds there are – the Miniature Poodle. This adorable fur ball makes even the most un-dog lover of people to go out and adopt one himself.
Miniature Poodle
What is the difference between a Standard Poodle and a Miniature one? The Miniature Poodle measures at 28 to 38 cm at the highest point of the shoulder and weighs at about 7 to 8 kg. Anything larger would be classified as a Standard Poodle and anything smaller is known as a Toy Poodle.
Regardless what size, the Poodle is known for his exceptional intelligence and eagerness to please his master – making him one of the most trainable dogs there is. The downside to smart dogs is that you need to keep them mentally and physically stimulated for them to be happy.
Miniature Poodles are Smart!
Miniature Poodles also need to be trained socialization skills early on so that they do not become stubborn with strangers and other animals. Dogs of smaller size are known to be prone to have the “small dog syndrome” where they believe that they are the pack leader, instead of the human. Make sure you do not let this happen to keep harmony in the home. Poodles are sensitive to the tone of the voice so use a firm and strong voice when addressing your dog.
While this breed has an average life span of 12 to 15 years, they are not without health problems besetting them. Cataracts, retinal atrophy which eventually leads to blindness, anemia, heart problems, diabetes, and epilepsy are some ailments that the Miniature Poodle is said to be susceptible to. One of the best ways to maintain their good health is by providing them with a good diet and exercise.
Diet for Your Miniature Poodle
As much as you are able, feed your dog a natural diet. If this is not possible, choose high quality dog food that will not compromise your dog’s health. Meat should be listed as the primary ingredient in the dog food, but a mix of healthy vegetables, grains and fruits are also very beneficial to them. Dry dog food is healthy, although picky eaters might enjoy the more savory and aromatic canned dog food for their meals. Whatever it is, consult with the vet before making any decisions on your dog’s diet.
Now, even if you give your dog good food, do not neglect to exercise him daily. Miniature Poodles are great dogs to have if you live in apartments or small houses, but you still need to bring him out for walks regularly. If not, they will not only release their pent up energy in destructive ways, they will also not be able to maintain the proper weight. An obese dog will aggravate any health condition he may have.
Miniature Poodle Grooming
You will need to allot money monthly for your dog’s health and grooming, but it is worth it – a happy, healthy dog is one of life’s best gifts indeed. So do remember to groom your Miniature Poodle regularly to keep him looking clean and beautiful.
