It’s great having a happy and healthy dog around. They are among life’s best gifts to us. As such, we must do what we can to make sure that we give them the best life possible by ensuring their health and well-being. One of the ways we can do this is by giving them homemade dog food.
Serving Your Dog Homemade Dog Food
There are many benefits of serving your dog homemade dog food. For one thing, you are able to regulate the nutrients and proteins that he needs in his diet. This is especially true if your pet has a health condition that needs extra attention on. You can add helpings of vegetables, meat or fruit depending on the particular nutrient requirement his condition warrants.
Also, preparing the food yourself can be cheaper than buying one of those store bought bags of feed. For example, you can buy a pack of hotdogs, boil it in garlic-infused water, chop it up and feed it to your dog as doggie treats. A batch can last a long time so you will be saving time and money when you make these tasty nibblers. Store the little treats in the freezer until you need them. Remember to thaw them out thoroughly though, you don’t want your dog getting chilled teeth when they bite into the treats.
You may be thinking that preparing pet food is too time consuming. It doesn’t have to be. If you are cooking for yourself, just cook a little extra for your dog’s meal. There are some ingredients that are bad for him so make sure you read up on these food substances first before you give your dog anything to eat. If you don’t really like cooking all that much, then take time once or twice a week to whip up his meals and store them properly until consumption.
Of course, for those of you who really do not have the luxury or time to make dog food personally, there are premium dog foods in the market that will meet your pet’s dietary needs. Do not buy him just any of those commercial pet food. Choose one that is preferably organic and as natural as possible to the original source. It is pricier than the regular pet food, but it’s definitely worth it.
How to Start Feeding Homemade Dog Food
If you are feeding your dog pet food but are planning to start serving him homemade dog food, do so gradually. Introduce fresh food in small portion while lessening the amount of pet food in his meals. Slowly increase the amount of the natural fare until he is completely on it. Many times if the dog suddenly changes from one type of diet to another, stress occurs and this will affect his health.
You can give your dog 2 full meals a day, with little snacks in between. You should monitor his calorie intake closely because even if he is consuming healthy homemade dog food, too much of it will result in an overweight dog and will complicate his health.
